Just A Likkle Piece of Jamaica Inna Port Talbot

African Caribbean Elders who in the 1950's made Port Talbot their home.

‘Just ah likkle piece of Jamaica inna Port Talbot’ is a digital storytelling, photography, soundscapes and immersive installations project intending to capture the stories and personal narratives of African Caribbean Elders who in the 1950’s made Port Talbot their home.

The project captured stories that bring together the richness and diversity of this industrial town to a wider audience.

An exhibition at Aberafan Shopping Centre attracted hundreds of people who came to watch the films and see the exhibition. We were invited to give a presentation at the finale of Black History Month held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Some of the artifacts, stories and photographs will now form part of the permanent collection at St Fagans National Museum of History.

Now we’re planning stage 2 of this amazing project. We will be touring the exhibition to schools and community centres in Neath/Port Talbot and the project will be on display at the Pierhead Building in Cardiff in April 2020.

Quotes

They’re pioneers. They came into a country completely different from their own - they made Port Talbot their home

Faith Walker (Facilitator)

I came here in 1956, my husband had a job with the steel company, everyone who came here from Jamaica - I taught them the Way of the Welsh

Mrs G (Project Participant)

When we came here we didn’t know what to expect. When I was nursing I’d go in the dining hall, everything was potatoes, I’d be crying, oh no not potatoes again

Mrs Headman and Mrs Hall (Project Participants)

I was inspired by the video reliving the experiences of my elders, it brought back so many memories and it’s good that the elders of Port Talbot are giving a voice to tell their stories and experiences when they moved in but I’ll bet as the song says where ever I lay my hat that’s my home

Lorna (visitors to Aberafan shopping centre to see the exhibition)
